Hello Everyone,
My name is Christine (Soephanthaj Samantha) Vongdara. This is my 4th year of training at the Matsumoto Dojo, prior to that it has been 30
years ago since I have left the Dojo and come back. I was delighted and honoured when I asked Sensei if I can do my grading to achieve my black belt (Shodan). He replied “Yes” I can try. I hope I can achieve this achievement, it would mean a lot to me personally.

Besides Karate I work full time for Destination Cairns Marketing as the Financial Controller; I have been there almost 15 years. I do have a side job, I have a book-keeping business at home. Time to time I host overseas students as homestay Mother J. I have one daughter named Skye, she is in the Australian Army in her 4th year. She is a tough lady, her role is transportation, which mean she gets to drive a very big truck.

I enjoy training at the dojo and consider everyone there as a big Matsumoto family clan. It is a lovely Dojo. I salute Sensei for being there for us and passing on his skills and knowledge of this special Martial Art – Shito-ryu, I am intending to train until my body and mind says no.

TOWNSVILLE CLUB MEMBER: DEAN KYLE

Hello, my name is Dean Kyle. I currently assist instructors Ursula and Jill at the Townsville Matsumoto Academy. I have had a long history with karate practising under Tony Radley and Trevor Roberts in Brisbane. I participated in invitational tournaments in kata, team kata and kumite.

I came to Townsville in 2003-2004 with my wife, 3 daughters and a son. At that time I didn’t do any training for around 10 years – no excuses why not. In 2014/15 I came across the Townsville dojo and made a solid decision to start training again. I am glad I made that decision then and still am today.

I had to make some adjustments from my old Shotokan ways but I was up for the challenge. When I finally met Kazue Matsumoto I felt very humbled after everything I had heard and learnt about him. I was a bit nervous at my first training session but I quickly learnt why he is such a great teacher. I watched and studied his every movement and technique, how he utilised speed, focus and power. I have had vast improvements in my karate and in myself as a person from Sensei’s teachings.

The principle of ‘what you put in is what you get back’ is one to follow and Sensei has helped me along that pathway greatly through his instructions, lengthy experience and knowledge.

I have always appreciated seeing Sensei and Mrs Matsumoto and all the Cairns/lnnisfail members every time I go up with the Townsville crew and I really enjoy my time training with all levels, ages and genders.

I have achieved Shodan under the guidance of Matsumoto Sensei and my ever relentless instructors Ursula and Jill in 2015 and feel so honoured to have received that from Sensei.
Until we meet again….
